Positive-gram bacteria are very harmful and are often responsible for tooth decay, acne, pneumonia, tuberculosis and other diseases and conditions. Luckily, these types of bacteria can be eliminated by cashew nuts, kidney-shaped seeds which grow in the coastal areas of northeastern Brazil.

Cashew nuts are usually sold pre-shelled, as the interior of the shells contains a resin that must not be consumed. This resin is used for varnishes and pesticides. Cashew nuts contain a lot of copper, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and zinc, and contain a far lower percent of fat than other fruits. The fat they contain consists of 82% unsaturated fatty acids, while 66% of these acids are heart-healthy monounsaturated fats similar to those in olive oil.

According to studies, when monounsaturated fats are added to a low-fat diet of diabetic patients, they can reduce the triglyceride levels. High triglyceride levels are related to increased risk of heart disease, which is why you should consume cashews regularly, especially if you’re diabetic.

Cashew nuts contain rare anacardic acids which can kill gram-positive bacteria that are responsible for many health problems such as tooth decay, leprosy and pneumonia. Only 1 part of anacardic acids dissolved in 200 000 parts of water can kill gram-positive bacteria in only 15 minutes!

Prevent gallstones

According to research conducted by the Nurses’ Health Study which included 80 000 women, eating 1 ounce of cashews weekly can lower the risk of developing gallstones by 25%. This amount equals 2 tablespoons of nut butter or about 29 nuts, which is enough for a few afternoon snacks.

Reduce the risk of weight gain

Due to their cardio-protective properties, people avoid cashew nuts fearing weight gain. However, studies have suggested that eating cashews at least 2 times a week can significantly reduce the risk of weight gain. Another study which lasted for 28 months and involved more than 8 800 women found out that people who eat cashew nuts twice a week have 31% less chances of gaining weight than those who rarely eat them. People in the study who never ate nuts gained far more weight than those who ate cashews at least 2 times a week.

According to the scientists, frequent consumption of nuts is related to reduced risk of gaining 5 or more kilos.
