Warning: Stop Using Turmeric If You Are In These 6 Types Of People
Turmeric is the world’s third best-selling botanical supplement, preceded by only flax and wheatgrass. The curcumin in turmeric is used in food thanks to its pleasant aroma and yellow color. However, just because it’s a natural ingredient it doesn’t mean it is not toxic. Many other natural ingredients are toxic, like strychnine and cyanide. Turmeric doesn’t cause substantial side effects, but people have reported nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and stomach issues when consuming it. If you combine curcumin with black pepper you will be consuming as much as 29 cups of the daily dose of turmeric. This will result in increased blood levels as well as changes in the DNA in vitro.
The following types of people should not use turmeric:
- Pregnant or lactating women
Adding turmeric in your meals should be better than turmeric supplements during pregnancy. Turmeric is safe during pregnancy or breast feeding if consumed in moderate daily doses. However, if consumed in higher doses it can be unsafe. It can support a menstrual period or stimulate the uterus during pregnancy.
Turmeric might decrease the testosterone levels and sperm movement in men and even reduce fertility. If you are trying to have a baby, be very cautious of turmeric.
- People dealing with gallstones
Recent studies claim that turmeric can cause gallbladder pain in people suffering from gallstones. Avoid it if you are dealing with this issue. However, curcumin protects the function of the liver and prevents gallstones by acting as a cholecystokinetic agent, easing the function of the gallbladder by keeping the bile from stagnating.
- People with biliary tract obstruction
People with this issue should be wary of curcumin, although it can actually stimulate the gallbladder to empty and reduce the risk of gallstones formation in healthy individuals.
- People with kidney stones
Too much turmeric can increase the risk of developing kidney stones. Turmeric is rich in soluble oxalates, which attach to calcium and create insoluble calcium oxalate, responsible for 75% of all kidney stones. People with kidney stones need to avoid turmeric because even moderate amounts will harm them. Instead, limit the daily doses to less than 40 or 50 mg., which equals to a teaspoon of turmeric.
- People with diabetes
Diabetes patients who consume turmeric can experience decreased blood sugar levels. If you suffer from diabetes, use turmeric with caution or it will make blood sugar too low.
- People who need surgery
Turmeric may cause slow blood clotting and be inappropriate for people who should have surgery. Before a scheduled surgery, stop consuming turmeric for at least two weeks.
