There’s a big list of drugs that can cause kidney damage, so it’s hard to decide which of them are the worst. However, we have a list for you which will narrow down the worst drugs for your kidneys divided into categories.


Methichillin, sulfonamindes, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin.


Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

COX-2 inhibitors

Recently, two drugs have been withdrawn from the shelves due to cardiovascular toxicity: rofecoxib and valdecoxib. They are a special class of NSAIDs that can damage your kidneys beyond repair.

Heartburn drugs

Omeprazole, lancoprazole, esomeprazole.

Antiviral drugs

Acyclovir, tenofovir and indinavir. Acyclovir might be present under the brand name Zovirax.

Hypertension drugs

Captopril (Capoten).

Rheumatoid arthritis drugs

Hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine and infliximab. These drugs are used to treat malaria, lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Bipolar disorder



Trimethadione and phenytoin.

Chemotherapy drugs

Cisplatin, pamidronate, interferons, cyclosporine, carboplatin, tacrolimus, mitomycin C, quinine as well as anti-thyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil.
