Tiffany Brien is a popular fitness blogger which has recently posted a “bad day” photo online to show people that they need to take care of their body. The pictures were taken 12 hours apart – one in the evening before going to bed, and one after waking up.

“We are not all what we seem on social media,”Tiffany wrote. “I thought I would share a bad day with you to show you nobody is ‘perfect’ and it is ok to have an off day where your body just decides to not play ball. Don’t worry girls, it happens to the best of us.”

Tiffany says that her bloating is caused by a combination of stress, lack of sleep, hormones and food intolerances. She says that it’s something she has been struggling with for years. After doing her own research, she was able to identify the foods and activities that stressed her out and subsequently caused the bloating.

“I have gone over everything I ate and I was relatively clean so it could be something I think is healthy that my body now thinks “naaah no likey”. Sometimes your body becomes intolerant to something you’ve always eaten, you just have to work it out. Fun game though? No. Not really,” she says. She also considers the stress an important factor for bloating. “Stress. The killer. I have a busy and stressful job which pushes me every day. I love my job and wouldn’t change it for the world but I have to factor in de-stress time to help me unwind and allow my insides to untwist after a tough day in the office. Yoga, walks with the dog or just putting my feet up and watching Netflix normally do the trick,” Tiffany says, and continues: “I am in no way perfect. In fact I am miles away from being a role model when it comes to looking after myself fully in this sense. We all have our areas of weakness. I know what I am doing wrong and I know how to fix it but it is actually implementing it into your lifestyle that’s the tough bit. I am trying extremely hard to sleep more, relax more and eat right (not less, just right) and I am definitely seeing improvement and will share tips and photos as I go.”

Bloating is a common condition which can luckily be treated. Irritable bowel syndrome or celiac disease can cause the condition and it can be aggravated by stress. Food intolerances are also a cause – you should see a nutritionist in order to determine yours.

Smaller causes such as excess gasses, constipation or swallowing a lot of air when talking or eating may also cause bloating.

Here are some tips from Tiffany to avoid bloating:

  • Get 6-8 hours of sleep overnight;
  • Take probiotics and multivitamin supplements;
  • Start a food diary and note the days when you are bloated;
  • Drink peppermint tea every day to relieve your tummy.
