Food labels often contain misleading tricks which trick us into consuming foods full of chemicals. Popular tea brands also use this to trick their customers into thinking that their products are better than their counterparts.

Many companies have been found to cover up the low quality of their tea. Luckily, there are still brands that use natural ingredients and which label their products properly.

“You can breakdown anything that is found in nature and if it ends up tasting like the flavor you wish to use – you can add it to any product and call it NATURAL FLAVOR on the ingredient label. It could come from a stone in the ground and you’d never know,” Ahmed Rahim, CEO of Numi Tea said. This is why you should always avoid the “natural flavor” labeled teas.

Most tea brands such as Tea Forte, Mighty Leaf, Trader Joe’s, Tetley, Allegro, Lipton, Celestial Seasonings, Tazo, Teavana, Twinings, Yogi, Bigelow and Republic of Tea contain high levels of toxins, pesticides and fluoride which can harm your health.

Cheap tea bags contain fluoride and pesticides

As most non-organic tea plants are not washed during preparation, pesticide residues stay on them in quantities well above the allowed limits. According to a recent study, cheap tea brands contain enough fluoride to endanger your life and increase the risk of serious diseases.

Some of these tea brands contain 7 parts per million fluoride, while only 4 ppm is allowed. This is terrifying as fluoride is very harmful and can accumulate in your body for years. The plant accumulates fluoride as it grows, so older herbs and their leaves contain more of it. Low-quality teas are often made of these leaves and are far more harmful.

What about decaffeinated tea?

As it turns out, decaf tea is even more dangerous. This is why you should stick to white tea and always buy organic tea for home. Buy loose leaf tea and brew your tea from scratch instead of using bagged tea.


Paper tea bags have been treated with epichlorohydrin, a compound used in the production of epoxy resins and as a pesticide. According to the National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health, it is a dangerous carcinogen. When it comes in contact with water, epichlorohydrin hydrolyzes to 3-MCPD, an organic chemical compound that is highly carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans. It has been related to lowered fertility and suppressed immune function.

Antioxidant-rich teas won’t make a huge difference in balancing the chemicals and additives, but looking at the chart below will help you identify what tea brands you should avoid.
