Have you ever looked at a bread with a mold and had doubts of whether you should throw it or not? Then this is the article you need to read.

What’s mold?

It’s a microscopic fungi that lives on plant or animal matter. Some cause allergies and respiratory issues and some can produce mycotoxins, poisonous substances. Some few molds, however, are safe to eat.

Safe to eat

  1.Dry meats/hard salami

The mold adds flavor to the salami, so you can just scrub the mold off and eat it. It’s normal for these shelf stable products to have mold.

2.Hard cheeses

You can cut an inch or more around the mold, and wrap the cheese in new covering. The mold usually cannot penetrate deep in the cheese.

3.Mold on fruit and vegetables

Cut an inch around the mold and throw it away. It cannot penetrate deep in hard products.

4.Gorgonzola/blue cheese

Cut out the mold around and an inch below. Molds that are not a part of the manufacturing process can be an issue.

Foods to toss when moldy

  1.Luncheon meats

  2.Cooked leftovers meat and poultry

  3.Cooked casserole

  4.Cooked grain and pasta

  5.Soft cheese

  6.Yoghurt and sour cream

Foods with high moisture can be contaminated under the surface. Moldy foods can contain pathogenic bacteria.
