We’re sure you know how harmful can eating processed and fast foods be to our health. Recently, Grant Imahara of “Mythbusters” fame visited a McDonald’s fry factory to see what ingredients are used in the popular French fries. The results were shocking – McDonalds’ French fries contained ingredients which are known to cause brain damage, autoimmune disorders and even cancer!

During the examination, Imahara used a reverse-engineering process to identify the following ingredients:

Soybean oil

Canola oil

Hydrogenated oil

Hydrogenated soybean oil

Citric acid

Hydrolyzed wheat

Sodium acid pyrophosphate

Natural beef flavor

Hydrolyzed milk

The most dangerous ingredients on the list are TBHQ, dimethylpolysilioxane and hydrogenated soybean oil.

Tertiary butylhydroquionone or TBHQ, is a phenol used to prevent food deterioration, but can also be found in perfumes and bio-diesel.

Hydrogenated soybean oil contains a huge amount of trans fats which can be very harmful.According to a study, about 100 000 deaths in the USA can be prevented annually by simply avoiding trans fats and replacing them with healthier polyunsaturated and monosaturated oils.

The last dangerous ingredient on the list is dimethylpolysiloxane, a compound used in silly putty, hair conditioners and aquarium tank sealants. This dangerous ingredient has been found to contain formaldehyde, a toxic chemical associated with cancer, allergies, brain damage and autoimmune disorders.

All of this information was part of McDonalds’ “Our Food. Your Questions” campaign which strives to provide more nutritional information about their products. However, even besides the company acknowledging the harmful ingredients in their French fries, they have yet to make a change in the recipe.
