High levels of uric acid in the blood can cause uric acid crystals. They are created by purines, products of protein breakdown, usually found in wine, mushrooms, and shellfish. The body normally gets rid of the excess uric acid, but in people with hyperuricemia, the acid collects in the joints and gout develops. These crystals are sharp and cause a lot of pain and inflammation in the tissues.

But some herbs can dissolve the crystals and reduce the levels of the acid. Here are some of them:

Devil’s claw

This is a strong natural anti-inflammatory herb, which helps in arthritis and gout. It has substances which reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood. The common dose is 500 to 750 mg 3 times a day.

Alfalfa sprouts

Also called Lucerne, rich in vitamins and minerals, and has the ability to lower uric acid levels. It can increase the pH value in the body because of its alkalizing properties. That’s why it can dissolve the crystals and prevent gout.

Fresh lemon juice

Lemon is very rich in vitamin C, which can strengthen connecting tissue and so reduce joint damage made by the crystals. Drinking fresh lemon juice can prevent gout attacks and reduce inflammation by stimulating the formation of calcium carbonate in the body, which neutralizes acids in the blood, including uric acid. The citric acid in lemons can dissolve the uric acid crystals, lowering the levels of uric acid that way.

Burdock root

This herb has long been used as a home remedy to arthritis and acute gout attacks. It cleans the blood of toxins, reduces inflammation and encourages urine excretion. You need about 20 to 30 drops of burdock root tincture in 8 oz. of water, 3 to 4 times a day for just a few days period.

Sour Black Cherries

 Black cherries and their juice are strong natural remedies, great in treating gout. They reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood by dissolving the crystals. Cherries have an enzyme which neutralizes uric acid and has powerful alkalizing abilities as well. They are also rich in anthocyanin’s which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and alleviate the gout symptoms. To prevent gout attacks consume between ½ dozen and 2 dozens a day.
