Although very popular, dyeing your hair with commercial hair dyes has been found to be very dangerous for your health. Studies have shown that 65% of women use commercial dyes on their hair full of dangerous toxins, and according to the National Cancer Institute, some of these dyes contain up to 5000 harmful chemicals! This is why we suggest using the following natural hair dyes which can work just as well:

  1. Coffee

Coffee is the ideal ingredient if you want to make your hair chocolate. Make a cup of strong espresso and leave it to cool down, then mix 2 cups of a natural conditioner, 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds and the cup of cold espresso and apply it on your hair. Leave the dye to work for an hour before rinsing with ACV, then wash your hair with water and shampoo. As an alternative, you can also wash your hair first, then pour some fresh coffee over it and let the dye work for 20 minutes before rinsing with ACV. It can take a few tries, but coffee will definitely give you a nice chocolate color.

  1. Tea

Tea is not as strong as coffee, but it will cover gray hair. As a natural hair dye, tea works best with your natural color. Black tea can cover gray hair, while chamomile tea works best for blond and red hair. Use 3-5 teabags per a couple cups of water and apply the tea directly on your hair, or mix it with a conditioner. You should let it work for an hour before rinsing with water.

  1. Herbs

Many herbs can help you color your hair naturally. For red hair, you can use marigold, calendula, hibiscus or rosehips. Brunettes can use rosemary, nettle or sage to darken their hair, while marigold, saffron and chamomile work best on blonde hair. To use the herbs on your hair, boil them in water for 30 minutes, strain the mixture and apply it. We suggest leaving the herbal mixture to dry for an hour on direct sunlight if possible.

  1. Beet and carrot juice

Beets and carrots can provide reddish highlights and improve your hair color. Use them alone or mixed – just apply a cup of the juice on your hair, then wrap it and let the dye work for an hour. Rinse with ACV and water in the end.

  1. Henna

Henna has been used for temporary tattoos and as a hair dye for a long time. It is a pigment from henna leaves that can color your hair red or orange. Mixing the powder with chamomile can lighten the color. To use henna as a natural hair dye, mix a cup of it with 2 cups of lemon juice, then apply the dye on your hair and leave it to work for 4-6 hours. Comb your hair nicely afterwards, wrap with plastic wrap and let the dye work for another 2-3 hours before washing your hair as usual.

  1. Lemon juice

Lemon juice will provide great highlights to your hair. Just apply some on your hair and leave it to dry out in the sun for best results. However, you may need to repeat the process a couple of times for best results.

  1. Walnut shells

Walnut shells will make your hair dark brown, but they can also stain your skin, so use them carefully. Crush some walnut shells and boil them in water for half an hour, then let the mixture cool before applying it on your hair. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water after about an hour. If you want to darken your hair further, simmer some of the juice until a ¼ remains in the pot and use it on your hair again.

As you can see, there are many natural remedies that can dye your hair. Use them in order to prevent the problems associated with commercial hair dyes.
