But, sometimes the neck and back pain occur without no apparent cause, which makes it more difficult to treat. If you have unexplained neck and back pain, here’s an unexpected factor to consider: your clothes. Clothes are not just the cause of pain; they could actually worsen the condition!

Wear the following pieces of clothing on your own risks:

  1. Bras that don’t fit

A bra that does not fit will not support you properly, and cause back and breast pain. Thin straps aren’t helping either. “An ill-fitting bra will cause you to slump and fold your shoulders forward, leading to painful postural disorders”, Richard Moore, a consultant osteopath and sports massage therapist told the Daily Mail. Find a specialist in bra fitting if you want to get good results.

  1. Halter tops

Halter tops can cause you to pull the neck forward as they don’t distribute weight across your shoulders evenly. This is especially painful for women with large breasts. It may occur with any type of bra. According to Tim Hutchful of the British Chiropractic Association, this can lead to neck strain, muscle tension and pull you into a damaging posture – the anterior carriage posture, where the neck sticks forward.

  1. Heavy necklaces

Your neck has the role of supporting the weight of your head. Heavy necklace can be the tipping point. Hutchful told the Daily Mail: “Anything that pulls the neck forwards or backwards tips the head away from its point of neutral balance … This can create neck tension, pain and damage, and long-term could encourage a slouched posture with damaging consequences for the back.”

  1. Skinny jeans and pencil skirts

These pieces of clothing make it difficult to move naturally. You may not be able to bend at the knees, or change your walking posture. This may lead to pulled muscles or disk issues as well as back pain.

  1. Tight neckties

If the necktie is too tight, it can lead to movement issues in the neck as well as increased tension. If you can’t slip a finger between the neck and shirt collar, it’s too tight.

  1. Heavy backpacks

Heavy backpacks cause changes in the postural angles and increase the back pain. Studies have shown that bigger backpacks worn for a longer period cause bigger postural problems in children. This puts them at an increased risk of neck and back pain. It causes issues in adults too, especially if your backpack is always full.

  1. High heels

Yes, ladies, we know they make you more seductive, but wearing high heels alters the muscle coordination patterns in your trunk and hips. According to a research, this leads to abnormal spine loading patterns and increases the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. If you must wear them, pick short heels and reduce the amount of time spent in them.

  1. Flip-flops

One of the most popular beach accessories, flip-flops alter your gait as they have no structure and must “hold” on to your toes. This leads to a shorter stride length and a larger ankle angle as you grip on to the footwear. It causes issues with your hips, lower legs, knees and back pain. Justin Shroyer, an Auburn University researcher says: “We found that when people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back … Variations like this at the foot can result in changes up the kinetic chain, which in this case can extend upward in the wearer’s body.”
